Are you mixing your business (or product) brand information with your information on a single Google Plus page that is branding you as an influencer?
Well, are you?
If you are, unless you're planning to work on your products and businesses forever, then you need to stop!
In this document, you'll learn how to create a brand page and other page types that will keep your information segregated and keep things simple.
Important Information About Your Google Plus Page
At the end of this post, there is going to be a very important piece of information that you do not want to miss.
So, don't compromise your SEO efforts by skimming over the details and missing the tip!
Do You Have Two Google Accounts?
You really should have two accounts:
- one account dedicated to you as an influencer
- and one account each for any asset you may one day decide to sell (this includes your brand page).
As a general rule, if you want to grab the Gmail address for something, create an account.
You also should have one that is truly private that you only give out to close friends and family, but that's up to you.

The information there will take you through the process and the reasons why two accounts are better than one.
Of course, you don't have to have more than one account.
But it seems like a small inconvenience today, to stave off a potentially big problem in the future.
Setting up Your Brand with a Google Plus Page
While you don't have to have more than one account, the information I'm going to be providing here assumes you do.
So, if you only have one account then just adapt what I'm telling you to do to your scenario.
First, let's establish some terminology so that I can better communicate with you.
When I refer to your "business account" I'm referring to the Google account that you set up first for your business (your non-influencer account).
When I refer to your "influencer account", I'm referring to the second Google account I had you set up that you are unlikely to sell at any time.
Claim your brand with a Google Plus page.
Log into your business account.
Then go to Google Plus.
There will be a few popups that you need to get through, and when you do you should be looking at something like this on the left:
See that grayish link that says "Google+ for your brand", click it.
On the page that comes up, click the button that says "CREATE GOOGLE PLUS PAGE".
Continue going through the process that starts by asking you to choose your "Brand Account name".
When you get to the page that tells you about enabling your brand page, click the "Enable" link.
Well Done! You Just Created Your Google Plus Page for Your Brand!
It's not very impressive yet, but hey, at least it exists.
Google will show you some dialog windows that tell you about your page, read those and click the various buttons.
When you're done, you'll end up with a page on the left that looks something like this:
If you see this menu (other menu items like Settings and Help have been cropped) then you've succeeded.
Something that you need to be aware of is the profile circle on the top right.
Before you upload a logo it'll have the initials of the account (or Google Plus page) in it.
If you click on it, you'll see that you are currently "logged in" as your brand, and your business account below it.
Click on your business account.
The screen will refresh and you'll be taken back to your business account and the menu on the left will revert back to the prior image.
Click on the circle again and then select your brand account, the menu will change to what is above.
This is important for several reasons.
First, your actual business account does NOT have a G+ profile. That's why there's a menu item that says "Join Google+" when you have your business account selected.
You do not need to, or probably even want to, create a Google+ account on your business account.
All posts will be made into your brand account's Google Plus page.
Whichever account you happen to have selected is what you are going to +1 (like) things with and use to comment.
Connect Your Brand Account to Your Influencer Account
The business Google account is just there as a container.
It acts as the owner of the various properties that are going to be dedicated to your business, like your brand page.
You will typically not log in to your business Google Account unless you are creating a new property (like a community for example).
You will manage your brand's Google Plus page from your influencer account.
Let's get that account connected up to your business brand now.
Select your brand account from the profile circle in the top right of the page.
Click on your profile circle again (that should now be your brand icon) and click the "Manage account" button.
As a result, the "Brand Account details" page should show up.
There should be a button that says something like "MANAGE PERMISSIONS", click it.
Next, a dialog should pop up that shows your business account as the "Primary owner".
In the top right of the dialog window, there should be a very small icon that looks like a couple of people with a "+" to their left (), click that.
In the "Add new users" dialog, add the email address of your influencer account, then choose the "Owner" role in the drop down beneath the name you typed.
Finally, click the "INVITE" link.
As an aside, using this same technique you can add other Google accounts to manage your Google Plus page with different roles.
This allows you to give access to multiple people to make posts or act on your behalf.
Once you've clicked the invite link, an email will be sent to your influencer account.
Once You Accept Your Influencer Account will be Connected to Your Brand Page
Go to your influencer account email and click the "Accept Invitation" link in the email.
It should ask you to log in using your influencer account.
If it doesn't, then log out of your current account (by clicking the profile circle and then the "Sign out" button) and then click the accept invitation link again.
Once you are logged in, you'll need to accept the invitation.
Your influencer and business accounts are both connected to your brand account.
The business account is the primary owner and your influencer account is an owner.
Both should be able to do whatever you need to your brand.
Now if you click your profile circle as your influencer account you should see the same brand account you saw before.
Time to Set Up Your Google Plus Page Brand
Remember when I had you set up your profile for your influencer account?
Now you need to do the same thing for your brand.
Select your brand from your profile menu.
In the menu on the left, click on the "Profile" link.
Next to the "About" link on your profile cover page, click on the "EDIT PROFILE" button that shows up.
Click on "Manage Page".
You'll see the same type of setup as when you changed your influencer account profile information.

At this point, you don't ever have to log in to your business account again unless you need to set up new properties that you want it to own as the primary owner.
You can do the Same Thing For You as an Influencer
If you want, you can repeat the process but this time for your influencer account.
Why would you do this?
Because if you have a staff, a personal assistant, or you think you might one day have some assistants, then you might want to consider this approach.
By doing this then you can go through the same process that you just went through to create your business brand page.
This way you could assign other accounts to work on it on your behalf.
If you think this is too much confusion or you just don't want to do that, I understand.
There's nothing wrong with just using your influencer account as your main account.
What Nobody Tells You About Your Google Properties
Here's that important bit of information that I told you that you needed to know.
Did you know you can change the URL of your Google Plus influencer account and your business brand account?
Yes, you can!
You can have a URL like this: https://plus.google.com/+BuzzyMarketing
Of course, yours would have whatever you chose instead of BuzzyMarketing.
But you can't have this very important piece of branding right now.
You see, in an attempt to cut down on spam accounts Google has put a couple of restrictions on the Google+ accounts.
What does customizing your Google Plus page URLs have to do with SEO?
If you get links, and they're going to a non-branded URL, how is that helping you?
Links to your non-branded URLs are not ideal, you want these links to be going to your branded URLs.
So how do you get your branded URL for your influencer account and your Google Plus page for your brand?
Requirement Number 1 - Each account has to be at least 30 days old (yes, this includes your branded Google Plus page)
I know, it's a drag, and that's why I tell my followers to go through this process as soon as possible, even if they don't plan on posting anything for a while.
You can do anything you need to do with your Google+ account, you just can't have a custom URL until day 31 (down to the second).
So go set up a calendar reminder right now for 32 days into the future and paste the URL of this page in the body.
Paste the following in there too: "I need to choose my custom URL for my Google Plus brand page and influencer Google Plus page today!"
Requirement Number 2 - Each account has to have at least 10 followers
You have to get 10 people to follow both your influencer account and any brand account that you want a custom URL.
They can be the same 10 people or different people.
In fact, there's been rumors that this number is going to change so to be safe, assume you're going to need 20 people.
It's okay, really.
You've got plenty to keep you busy for the next 30+ days.
You have other accounts to set up, articles to write, and training to complete.
Oh yeah, and followers to get.

It should be easy, after all, you have 32 days to get your followers following.
You're Ready to Start Using Your Google Plus Properties
It seems like a lot, but it's really not all that hard.
The reason that there's so much to this is two-fold:
I'm helping you to avoid some common pitfalls that many do not know about when they get started...
And, I'm forcing you to think about your exit strategies now.
By now you should have:
- two Google accounts created
- a Google Plus page for your brand
- and an influencer Google Plus account that you can use to promote not only yourself but your brand(s).
These are two of the tools that are going to be in your toolbox that you'll use to increase your presence and drive traffic.
Don't worry too much about your future followers and how to use them to drive traffic, we'll get to that soon.
