Create Your Own Successful Online Business
You can be the owner of your very own successful online business. It's not a pipe-dream, it's not silly, it's not even really that hard!
People start online businesses every day, thousands of them!
Notice that I did not say successful businesses.
That's because it's very easy to get started, it's hard to know what comes next! I've seen so many get so far, and then...they quit! I think it's safe to say that most end up quitting due to a lack of traffic.
I think it would be a safe bet to say that most end up quitting due to a lack of traffic.
I think that's because many believe that it's as simple as knowing how to put a site online. I mean, with over a billion people online you'll only need a tiny fraction of that to be successful, right?
What actually ends up happening is that someone will put something online, spend a few days working through what they think they need to do to succeed, and then...crickets!
Nobody comes. Nobody buys anything. Nobody engages. Nothing happens.
This nothingness continues week after week. Then... they quit!
Next, they tell people that they tried that "online thing" and it sucked. They then ultimately join the massive group of cynics that are constantly chanting the mantra, "it will never work, quit wasting your time".
The best many can actually hope for, is that they'll somehow end up getting a little bit of cash from their efforts, and that may actually hook them.
So, how do these people find you? It's not magic.
You can think of it like this. Say you're constructing a building. But there's a problem, there aren't any roads at all that lead to your building. and it's in the middle of nowhere. There's not even a major road in site.
Worse, it's in the middle of nowhere, and there's not even a major road in site.
So, you have to build some roads.
If you're just starting out, like so many are that end up on this page, then everything's missing.
Even if you aren't just starting out, there are likely things that are missing, you know, like - oh - say traffic, for instance?
The point of this page is to bring together the various aspects that are missing and to help give you some actionable advice on what to do next.
I won't be getting into traffic just yet, that'll come later. You've got to erect your building first.
I think that's enough introduction, let's get to the goods.
Giant Leap 1) Getting in the right State of mind with realistic expectations
Having the right expectations is pivotal. Too often I talk to people that say things like:
James, I've worked at the same place for the last 5 years, and I just found out my job is ending in 6 months. I need an income of blank thousand dollars a month by then or I'm going to be in bad shape.
That's a crappy situation to find yourself in. My advice? Start looking for a job now, and start creating an online presence after you've done everything possible for the day to ensure you are going to have a job in six months.
I urge you to read the document at the link above, it discusses realistic expectations as clearly and bluntly as I can.
The important takeaway: Just like the offline world, the online world is not magic. It takes time, energy and often some cash. Sure you don't have the requirements of a "brick-and-mortar" business, but there are still requirements, there are still rules, and you are still going to have to pay your dues.

Giant Leap 2) Find a profitable niche market that you can grow into a business
The next thing you need to know is what you are going to focus on. This can be a very difficult task if you don't already have an idea in mind. However, do not let it paralyze you!
This is something that people often will obsess over for days. This need not be the case but often is.
If you already have a business, or you intend to build a brand around yourself, the congratulations! One of the biggest hurdles is behind you. However, you might want to go through the material here anyway just to make sure you've covered your bases.
If you don't have any ideas or a firm direction then this is something you need to do before you get too far. Other steps are going to be defined for you upon completion of this step.
If you get stuck, and cannot find a way around your own personal analysis paralysis, or just want to get some questions answered, then, by all means, ask!
The form at the bottom of this page, and practically every other page on this site is there for just that reason, but you have to ask your questions to get any answers.
Another way to contact me and to get other perspectives besides mine is to go sign up for a free Wealthy Affiliate account.
You'll hear a lot from me about WA (Wealthy Affiliate) because of the community there. The people there are from all over the world, with varied backgrounds.
The best part about this community is that you will get the benefit of my background, as well as many others. It's worth the price of entry (free).
Giant Leap 3) Find the best niche web hosting provider for your business
Once you get to this point, you have to start thinking about expenses.
If you've been keeping up by going through the steps in order, you'll know that I've been alluding to certain expenses that you are going to have to make from time to time.
This is one of those times.
Hosting your website is something that is very serious. You want people to be able to get to your content day or night, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with as little trouble as possible.
That simply means that whatever company "hosts" your business is a very important decision.
Giant Leap 4) Find the best domain name for your niche website
Finding a domain name is another important exercise, one that goes hand in hand with finding the topic of your niche.
Ideally, you want your domain name to reflect your chosen niche, and that can be tough sometimes.
The information below will help you think about what you should be considering, will give you some tools to help you, and finally will walk you through the process of picking out your domain name.
